The inspiration for all we do is a young man named Reid Pernica. Reid was diagnosed with metastatic Ewing sarcoma in 2005 at 17 years old. Since Ewing sarcoma is such an aggressive cancer he underwent many months of chemotherapy, many radiation treatments and stem cell therapy. Reids cancer was not able to be operated on. During all of these horrible treatments Reid felt very frustrated by the lack of knowledge and progress being made on research into Ewing sarcoma. He felt strongly that it needed to be addressed especially since Ewing sarcoma was such a life-threatening disease. He talked with his oncologists about starting a foundation whose main goal would be to raise funds specifically for Ewing sarcoma research, early detection and awareness, since he knew first hand how important that would be. One of Reids oncologists, Dr David Malkin, is still researching Ewing Sarcoma in 2026. Sadly, in November 2007 at 19 years old, Reid passed away. During his battle, Reid never allowed this terrible disease to break his wonderful spirit. In 2008 the Pernica Family established the Ewings Cancer Foundation of Canada (ECFC). This foundation honoured Reid's inspirational life and brilliant spirit along with the ever important mission of addressing research and advocacy for Ewing sarcoma, which has significantly raised the profile of this cancer. Reid would be proud to know that he was instrumental in launching this important mission, and that finally those suffering from Ewing sarcoma will benefit from research In 2018, the ECFC transitioned to SickKids Foundation where the work continues.
